So Clark and his colleagues at the University of Melbourne, Australia, took apart a Wii balance board and hacked into its strain gauges and accelerometers to tap into their raw data. “We found the data to be excellent. I was shocked given the price: it was an extremely impressive strain gauge set-up.”

Now, in a paper published in the journal Gait and Posture (DOI: 10.1016/j.gaitpost.2009.11.012), Clark’s team has verified that the board’s data is clinically comparable to that of a force platform. “The low price of the Wii kit is now seeing it used to assess rehabilitation after stroke, traumatic brain injuries and to examine standing balance in children who were born pre-term,” he says.

For months in a row Nintendo’s systems has shown no sign of losing momentum.

In May, Nintendo absolutely dominated the sales charts. The Wii and the DS took the top two sales slots, with the DS selling 243,900 units more than its next-closest competitor, the PlayStation 3. That’s a sentence no one would have expected a year ago! Nintendo has released its reactions to the numbers, and the expanded information it provides is even more impressive.

“The Wii Wheel and Wii Balance Board accessories make game play fun for new gamers while presenting new challenges for those who have been playing a long time,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The diversity of the seven Nintendo games represented in NPD’s top 10 for May demonstrates how Nintendo has something for everyone.” Nintendo then pointed out that the Wii represented 63 percent of all current-generation consoles sold in May, with the DS having a 71 percent share of the portable market.
